Hyundai Heavy Industries started its solar business in 2005 with production centers in Eumseong, Chungcheongbuk-do (province), as part of a plan to bring new business to the table. In December of 2006, the company acquired ‘CE Mark’, an international safety mark recognized in 28 countries of Europe and the safety/quality marks of the ‘International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)’ recognized in 43 countries around the world.

By the time the second plant was up and operating during the second half of 2009, annual production capacity reached up to 600MW during 2011, where the company now plans to expand up to 1GW in 2012 and 2GW in 2013.

The company initiated its 3,000 ton annual production system of polysilicon through KAM, a joint venture company established between Hyundai and KCC(a renown chemical company in Korea).

In June 2009, the company acquires UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certificate for its photovoltaic modules, a US product safety testing agency. This was marked as the first in Korea, where Hyundai had proved its technology excellence by passing all the requirement tests.

Also in 2010, Hyundai acquired JET certificate and completed the J-PEC registration which are both essential requisite for entering the residential markets of Japan. The company also prepared to brand itself throughout the residential market by developing its very own residential solar generation kit into a widely used commercial brand.
