Site Evaluations
Almost every solar systems company will offer you a free site evaluation. It's what allows you and them to get a reasonable estimate of the work to be done and the costs associated with reaching your utility, conservation, lifestyle goals. It should only take 30-45 minutes and only require access to the exterior of your home. Commercial site evaluations are more involved and require more access.
Here's what typically goes into a site evaluation:
- Customer Goals for Solar System Install
- Current Average Monthly Electricity Costs (Twelve [12] Month history is best)
- Solar Orientation of the building or site (N, S, E, W)
- Available Roof or Ground Area
- Roof - Height, Slope, Pitch, Obstructions, Shading, Tile Type, Age, Condition
- Electric Distribution Panel - Service, Sub Service, Expansion Space
- Lighting, Ducting, Windows, Doors
- Vampire Loads
There are things you can do easily, quickly, and inexpensively to lower your electric bills:
- swapping out standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL)
- wrapping all heating and cooling ducting joints with new duct tape
- wrapping ducting in insulation
- adding insulation to attic, house/garage wall area
- unplugging unused appliances and electronic devices OR installing special surge protectors to isolate and eliminate "vampire" loads. Note: Vampire Loads are electronics that are using electricity even though they are not "Turned On". Yes, it does take electricity to run devices and keep them ready for usage.
