How Solar Works

Solar electricity generation is a simple process. The panels produce direct current (DC) that is turned into alternating current (AC) which is what homes use to power everything. When more electricity is produced than is being used by the home, it is automatically fed back to the electric grid for credit and later use.

  1. Sun shines on panels (photovoltaic = PV)
  2. Panels produce DC (direct current = DC) electricity
  3. Inverter switches DC to AC (alternating current = AC) for use
  4. Meter keeps track of electric usage
  5. If more is produced than consumed by home, it is automatically fed back to electric grid
  6. If more electricity is used than what is produced by solar, it is automatically taken off the grid for your use.

That's it. That is basically how it works for the homeowner, user.
